For 31 years, beginning in 1953 O'Neil was a solid umpire in the ECFOA. During the 1970s he worked several playoff games when the playoff system debuted in 1975. He was founder of the annual Thanksgiving Day breakfast at his home. "You knew you had made it as an official when you were invited to the breakfast," says Mauer.
